January Adventure
Someone (Eli) hosts a little event called the
December
Adventure every, well, December.
I unfortunately missed this year's (2025) adventure; but since I missed it,
I want to do a little January Adventure for myself!
The goal of this is twofold:
- I want to force myself to sit down and think hard about a project.
- I have a really bad sleeping schedule (it's ~2:40 am as I'm writing this,
and I usually go to bed at 3-4 am),
and I want to make it better; my goal is to go to bed by 12-1 am every day of January.
But what project do I want to in January? Uh, I don't know.
I've been thinking of ideas for a day or two, and wanted to maybe make a Forth-like with
metaprogramming,
which I've
somewhat done before,
or a language similar to
qdbp and
Arturo.
I'm writing this two days (well, one, actually) before January 1st, so I have an extra day to plan.
This year has been pretty unpleasant for me, so hopefully the next will be better!
weka pona!
Table of contants:
Day 1
I didn't really do much, I just played games with my friends.
I didn't even go to bed by 1, I went to sleep around 2:40-ish.
That's much better than normal, though, and I woke up at 9 am.
I also wrote this little story:
soweli ni en waso ni
soweli ni li toki e ni: "toki tawa sina a!"
soweli ni li Soka.
waso ni li toki e ni: "toki."
waso ni li Nisa.
Soka: "sina seme?"
Nisa: "mi pilin ike."
Soka: "a! tan seme?"
tenpo lili la waso Nisa li toki ala.
Nisa: "tenpo suno pini la tomo mi li pakala tan kon suli a!"
Soka: "ike ala a! mi wile pona tawa sina."
Nisa: "pona."
tenpo kama la soweli Soka en waso Nisa li pali e tomo pi waso Nisa.
tenpo kama la pali ni li pini.
Nisa: "wa! tomo mi li pona! sina pona mute a!"
Soka: "ni li ala. mi pona tan ni: sina en tomo sina li pona!"
pini ni.
I've been very unmotivated to code, lately,
so I'm a little worried about actually coming up with a project.
But whatever happens, happens;
I'm fine with not doing any projects as long as I go to bed at a reasonable
time.
Day 3
It seems I've forgotten about what I did on day 2.
So, I'm going to do this differently; at the end of the day,
I'll write about what I did. Then, on the next day's log,
I'll say if I actually went to bed at a good time.
Oh well, something to keep in mind when I do the December Adventure.
I went to bed at ~3 am last night, unfortunately.
Even worse, I had to get up at 8.
It's fine, though; it's just a single day out of the month.
The most interesting things that happened today are:
I recorded a Minecraft video; I'm still editing it at the time of writing.
And, I got someone interested in my 16-bit VM-based Brainf implementation,
BX16.
Speaking of BX16, I need to write an assembler for the VM's bytecode.
I'll either do that after I'm done writing this, or tomorrow.
Either way, it'll be in tomorrow's log.
I also found this meme that's very fitting for my situation:
Anyhow, I'm going to eat pasta salad now.
moku en telo li pona a
Days 4 & 5
I'm writing this at the end of day 5 because I was busy.
I went to a get-together on day 4, and today I had some things I needed to do around the house.
I believe I went to bed at 3-ish on day 4, and I went to bed at 4-ish last night.
I'm not doing that well at the moment, obviously, but I have many days to go.
I have at least been doing a bit, though; I did upload that video,
and I've been doing some work on BX16. The most interesting thing, though,
is that I've been thinking about creating a spiritual successor to one of my old projects,
ReqProc.
It's one of my early catlangs, but its design choices are reflected in my later projects.
I want to redesign it with metaprogramming; I'm not sure when that'll happen, but we'll see.
As I'm writing this, I've also had the idea of designing a Forth dialect for BX16.
I'm tempted to try designing one after I'm done writing this, even.
It's very close to 1 am, though, so maybe not.
My latest song fixations are Color by Finish Ticket, and Empty Spaces by Fuel.
I want to write some articles in toki pona and sitelen pona, soon.
mi olin e soweli suwi a
Days 6 & 7
I was very tired the night of day 6,
then I was busy this morning and most of the afternoon,
so I only now (6 pm) have a chance to write this.
I went to bed quite late the past 2 days,
so I'm not exactly doing the best,
but I'll try my best to sleep at a reasonable-ish time tonight.
Yesterday I finally pushed the update to BX16 that adds named procedures,
a couple new commands,
and some new instructions to the VM.
I've also finally written the assembler for BX16's VM bytecode,
although it's not public at the time of writing.
Additionally, my scripting catlang,
Page,
is exceptionally slow, so I've been thinking about what to compile it to.
My first thought was, as always, to write my own VM;
but I didn't really want to do that, so I've decided I'll probably compile to
Parrot.
despite it being unmaintained, it fits my language quite well and
is simple enough I can write a basic compiler in a reasonable amount of time. Probably.
Finally, I've also started learning
Esperanto.
toki pona was a gateway drug and I am addicted.
My latest song fixations are everything in
this playlist.
Ĝes la revido!
Days 8 through 11
I wonder how many days I can chain together at once.
Some fun things have happened in the past few days:
- I'm a year older now.
- I have a job now, and will be doing on-boarding tomorrow (yay!); I amusingly got the job on my
birthdate.
-
I found and bought the the book In The Land of Invented Languages by Arika Okrent while
looking for an Esperanto-English dictionary;
It's very good, and my favorite quote from the book is,
"[someone] said that Klingon speakers 'provide excellent reasons for forced sterilization.
Then again being able to speak Klingon pretty much does this without surgery'".
Today (day 11), I really didn't do anything; although because
someone (my friend)
was explaining their language to me, I got the urge to create my own;
its name is Suĉa Tono, I'll talk more about it in the next entry.
pona awo!
'goodbye' in Suĉa Tono
Days 12 through 19
well, I guess we're going to find out how many days I can chain together at once.
I've been exceptionally busy because of my job,
so I completely forgot about this blog.
I haven't really done much in terms of programming,
but I've added many words to Suĉa Tono, and it's going quite well.
I've even written a paragraph to see how the language holds up:
monsuto. ono es la ilo.
ono es juna ilo. juna era ilo.
juno kepe la ilo ton ero janoj.
Additionally, I've actually thought of a project I want to do:
Inspired by
EXAPUNKS by Zachtronics,
I want to make its assembly dialect usable for general programming as best I can.
I don't really have much of this planned out, but I at least know how I'll do the files.
I'll talk more about it in the next entry.
My latest song fixations are
Ameno by ERA,
MONEY ON THE DASH by Elley Duhé &
Whethan, and
HOT TO GO! by Chappel Roan.
pona awo!
Days 20 through 31
I'm writing this on February 3rd. Work makes you very busy, evidently.
Wow, January is... over.
It feels like more has happened to me in January (and this little bit of February) alone
than it has over the past few years.
It feels like it's been months but it's only been a few weeks.
I haven't really done any programming, other than the dictionary script for Suĉa Tono.
I've mainly just been working at my job, working on Suĉa Tono, and talking with friends.
I've managed to convince two people to learn toki pona, so I'm quite happy about that.
Speaking of Suĉa Tono, I'm still working on its grammar document,
so hopefully I'll be done with that soon.
There are several people I now consider siblings;
one of them is creating a conlang as part of a larger worldbuilding project.
It's very cool, for lack of a better description.
I love my siblings, they're one of the few things keeping me sane.
I'm obsessed with
Good Grief by Bastille
to such a degree that I find it a little disturbing.
I can't get it out of my head, and I feel like I'll never get sick of listening to it.
Otherwise, I quite like the songs in
this playlist.
I was listening to it as I wrote this entry, actually.
This is the final log for this little adventure.
tenpo ale la weka pona.
